Rockferry, the Welsh singer's lovingly constructed debut album, has already succeeded beyond expectations, and although Duffy may not quite be the ingénue portrayed by a clever press campaign (she nearly won a local television talent show a few years back while a single credited to Aimee Duffy is still available on iTunes) she is surely the most appealing of the current flood of young soul sirens. The astonishing title track, co-written by Bernard Butler, sounded like a lost transmission that had taken decades to get through as soon as it hit radio last year. But the gently rolling soul ballad "Stepping Stone", that strapping, inescapable monster hit "Mercy", the ice cool "Serious" (the one time she really does channel the spirit of Dusty Springfield) and the wistful, elegant "Warwick Avenue" are similarly effective. Suggestions by some that Rockferry is little more than sixties pastiche are churlish. Butler's previous work with David McAlmont (featured here as a backing singer) showed his skill at writing and arranging the dramatic, while her other collaborators such as Steve Booker and the team of Jimmy Hogarth and Eg White are hardly lightweights. But despite some wonderful orchestral settings, it's Duffy's terrific voice that makes this so satisfying, even overpowering Butler's exquisitely underplayed guitar work on "Rockferry" itself. Growling the blues on "Syrup & Honey" or belting it out over his lovingly arranged wall of sound on "Distant Dreamer", she sets the tone throughout, several of her songs dealing with escape, both physical and romantic. The sound of someone singing herself to stardom, Rockferry is at times genuinely amazing. Steve Jelbert

Product Description
With the original emcee gone in search of a solo career, the now two-man group hit the lab and did not emerge until recently. The end result is the highly anticipated, 21-track debut album which features instrumentals by the duo, and guest appearances from some of their favorite artists including Little Brother (ABB Records), Asheru of Unspoken Heard (7 Heads), and Maspyke. "We are big fans of all of the artists featured on the album," says Jason Skills. "It’s nice to hear your favorite emcees on your tracks. It takes the music to a place that you might not normally take it." A portion of the album was recorded by the artists’ who made special guest appearances on it with the exception of The Procussions track, "5 Minutes." That song was recorded at a well-known studio in Los Angeles where Jason is a freelance engineer. "We wanted to cut the vocals for ‘5 Minutes’ so I waited for a session to get done early, called The Procussions, snuck them in and hooked it up! while none of the other engineers were around," said Jason. "We knocked out the whole thing in one night!" The remaining tracks on the album, mainly the instrumentals and interludes, were recorded at both Soulo and Jason’s respective studios. Part hip-hop, part jazz, the duo draw from the music that influenced them while growing up to create a soulful vibe infused with bebop, funk, and everything in between.

Legendary Dogg Pound member Kurupt brings his Philadelphia to California roots full circle, teaming up with the fast rising 'Philly to Cali' trio Tangled Thoughts to deliver the ground breaking new album entitled appropriately "Philly 2 Cali." "Night Shift" is a compilation from Philidelphia producer Kevin Devine, AKA Dev Rocka. Dev provides the beats, with rhymes by Reef the Lost Cauze, Planet Asia, Maylay Sparks, and Killah Priest. It is a great introduction to a talented producer, as well as a solid album.

Dev constructs his beats using his trusty MPC 2000 and turntables, mixing a nice, fat drum sound with samples. The result is classic East Coast hip hop: hard beats, cinematic instrumentation, and an overall feel that is as coldly beautiful as the East Coast itself. His music pays homage to masters like DJ Premier and the Rza, without sounding derivative. The best way to describe "Night Shift" is classic hip hop as only people from the region that invented the genre can produce. The South may have bounce, and the West Coast may have G-funk, but only the East Coast can truly bring the cinematic boom-bap epitomized by artists like Mobb Deep, Gangstarr, and the Wu.

The raw beats are complimented by raw rhymes from a stable of rappers both well-known and relatively new to the game. Maylay Sparks sums it up on "Relax":

"I try to write something different
Not about the drinks or getting spliffted
Exemplify why I'm really gifted
Mic cord stay twisted around my arms dropping realistic
Shit to quench your thirst like mystic
Don't forget that it's a privilege to be involved in the music business"

One of the album's finest lyrical moments comes in "Vocab and Knowledge," when Drac calls out fake gangstas:

"Hundred dollar sneakers, nothing in the bank
Acting like a gunner when you fronting with a shank
Thinking like the masses your ass is grass is a catastrophe waiting to happen
So start strapping on your thinking cap and crack a book
A little vocab and knowledge to scholar from crook
In case you hadn't noticed
Somehow it's uncool to act like you know what you're talking about"

There are a lot of rappers who put out albums with ten different producers, so "Night Shift" is a nice change of pace. In a way it makes more sense sonically for a single producer to work with ten different rappers. "Night Shift" doesn�t feel like a compilation, and works well as an album.

The only real problem I have with "Night Shift" is that it is in danger of being slept on. With so many high-profile hip hop albums coming out this Fall, a little-known producer�s album doesn�t have good shot of making a dent. That�s a shame, because "Night Shift" is one of the better releases this year. Fans of "real" hip hop better check this out, because it is destined to be regarded as an underrated classic in ten years.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Freestyle Records are proud to announce the signing of Diesler.

Previously signed to Tru Thoughts, the one-man bandito, aka Jonathan Radford, grew up near Burnley, Lancashire and still resides in the surrounding valley. To date he has released 2 rather splendid albums as well as a motherlode of remixes on labels as varied as Ninja Tune, Jugglin/Raw Fusion, Catskills, Hi Top, Schema and Record Kicks. His first release "Cotton Wool", written when he was only 20, quickly found it's way onto Radio 1 and into the boxes of DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff Quantic and Dr Rubberfunk amongst many others. This success was followed with the "Ladies and Gentlemen Get Your Engines Ready" EP; a mixture of smooth, laid-back vibes and up tempo beats, from jazz and funk to Afro Latin rhythms, it perfectly encapsulated Diesler's globe-trotting sound and magpie-like ear for samples.

His 3rd album"The Rhythm Station" features 11 brand new songs with the talents of previous collaborators Laura Vane (Part Time Heroes) & Double Yellow as well as a handful of new artists. Musically the album builds on the mixing pot style of previous releases, but with a stronger emphasis on songwriting. From the sultry vocals of Laura Vane on the opener "Welcome To Hellmouth", to the dancefloor friendly "Carla's Beat" featuring Katie Miller, you can hear a more mature structure and melody to the songwriting. To prove he's just as comfortable knocking out hip hop as he is anything else, "Restless" features Leeds very own Testament (resident MC at the Gilles Peterson WW award nominated New Bohemia night) blessing the mic with his unique style. Elsewhere you can find the enigmatic Afrika Fuentes on the laidback "Passion", wordsmith Paranormal dropping science on the bubblin' "Some Assembly Required" and Danish songstress Kinny (from Kinny & Horne) on "Lovetouch".

We know what you're thinking a Diesler album wouldn't be complete without some some red hot, Latin-esque dancefloor bombs? Well, look no further than final track "When She Was Bad" surely a contender for dirtiest bassline of the year! Already making it's mark on dancefloors across the globe, this track caused a mini stampede when it was aired at the Big Chill festival this year.

Away from the studio Diesler has been putting the airmiles away, making numerous DJ appearances at festivals and clubs in the UK to tours of Europe & Japan. Break Mechanics is a hip hop crew getting a lot of attention in Denver's underground hip hop community. Their music is a combination of many styles but stays true to the roots of hip hop, with drums, bass and keyboards backing live MCs.

Break Mechanics have held long-time residencies at Denver clubs and performed with Blackalicious, Slick Rick and KRS-1.

The foundation of Break Mechanics is a wide range of musical experience and styles. Daren Hahn (drums) has played with Ani DiFranco, the Eels and Geggy Tah. Casey Sidwell (bass) plays with Denver-based Future Jazz Project, which also features MC Paas on the mic. Greg Raymond (keys) has toured extensively with the Motet from Boulder.

When Kaki King went into the studioto record the tracks for her fourth album, Dreaming Of Revenge, her producer, Malcolm Burn (Dylan, Chris Whitley, Emmylou Harris), had one condition: "He said, `If someone can't be sawing a log in half and whistling along to the song, I don't want it on the record,'" King recalls with a laugh. And so the bar was set. Burn's mandate was just the push King needed to make her most accessible CD yet. "Even though half the tracks are instrumentals, I feel like I'm writing pop songs," she says. "We really concentrated on the melodies. Everything I write tends to be dense and chordal, but this time the idea was to layer the challenging guitar work under very simple, beautiful melodies. I really wanted them to be memorable." That strict attention to song craft is a logical step for King, whose previous album, 2006's ...Until We Felt Red propelled this dazzling young guitar player and composer, known to instrumental music fans for her finger-picking, fret-slapping, and percussive thumping style, into previously uncharted indie-rock territory. Red found King branching out with songs that featured electric and pedal-steel guitar, horns, and, for the first time, vocals. Dreaming Of Revenge picks up that thread, continuing her evolution from acoustic instrumentalist to full-fledged, multi-faceted songwriter. Previously, her whispery, ethereal voice was used as mainly another element in her sonic arsenal. This time around, King put more effort into both her vocals and the lyrics she wrote for such deeply felt tracks as "Pull Me Out Alive," "Saving Days In A Frozen Head," "Life Being What It Is," and "2 O'Clock," the latter two of which she describes as break-up songs. "The words mean something now," she says. "They're actually telling stories."

Album Notes
Taking his cues from other forward-thinking electronica/hip-hop acts, namely DJ Shadow and RJD2, Wax Tailor (aka French sonic-collage artist JC Le Saout) makes a striking impression on his 2006 full-length debut, TALES OF THE FORGOTTEN MELODIES. Although Le Saout is mining well-worn territory, his heavy use of samples and his knack for establishing a highly cinematic atmosphere set him apart from the pack, as revealed on his cut-up, movie-dialogue-laden version of "Que Sera" and the dreamy "How I Feel," which weaves in the unmistakable voice of Nina Simone.

It’s right there; on the cover, the spine, or illuminating from your iPod screen. But it’s hard to corroborate it in your mind. London singer-songwriter Adele’s debut album is titled 19, referencing her age, and there are hints it’s true--its themes are almost exclusively concerned with young love’s highs and (mostly) lows and there’s a clipped estuary English tide-mark to her voice, allying her with the fresh-faced modern female songwriting guard; Lily Allen, Kate Nash, et al. But the sheer weight of her maturity--vocally, emotionally and in overall poise—really reduces that all to circumstantial evidence. Adele is carrying something much bigger here, you can’t help but be consumed by it on "Daydreamer" with it’s jazzy tip-toeing guitar and elastic vocal range and "Hometown Glory" with its deep, lonely piano serving as a bed for the raw emotional undressing that takes place above it. Draw a line between timeless, powerful singers like Ella Fitzgerald and the modern standard of Amy Winehouse; Adele balances and pirouettes confidently along that tightrope. Winehouse particularly informs the likes of "Cold Shoulder" and double-bass heavy "Best for Last", and that’s not an alignment that’s ever going to be easy to realise credibly. Needless to say, she does, with ease. On future classic "Chasing Pavements" she also gives a nonsensical phrase a handful of heart in lieu of meaning and when you can pull that off convincingly you know you’re in possession of something special. Most rap producers and their Roland keyboard mama’s wish they could ply their verbal wares on the mic, while their emcee counterparts often jones to twiddle a knob or two (or 24). So what happens when two of rap’s most renegade producers flip rhymes over each other’s beats for a full album? For starters, you get a whole heap of possibilities as to where hip hop can go sonically. On the Madlib-laced "The Official," the distorted bass lines and grimy drums are sure to make the jiggy, jaded, and conscious bob their head unremittingly. While Jay Dee (Dilla) rhetorically raps "and who says producers ain’t s’posed to rap?" on "The Mission," he doesn’t exactly do a great job disproving this theory on "Heavy" or "Mcnasty Filth" alongside his more talented Motown protégés Frank and Dank. Madlib is arguably the better emcee of the two, but not by much, as he’s just had more time to practice honing his mic skill with his numerous alter egos like the helium-voiced Quasimoto who appears on "Re act." Beats-wise, the album is borderline first-rate as Madlib and Dilla appear to be digging heavily in the Classical Indian music crates for inspiration. The sounds of Bollywood (Bolly’hood?) weave their way in and out of the title track and "Survival Test." No one wants to hear an album mostly filled with half-baked boasts and largely forgettable tales of female seduction. Thus, conceptually this dream project would have been even dreamier if they had enlisted the talents of Mos Def, Black Thought, or Pharoahe Monch. Yes, the sounds are of a champion, but the rhymes are more like the Los Angeles Clippers. --Dalton Higgins

"Urban Species are a London rap outfit on the UK acid-jazz label Talking Loud. One listen to the album and it's easy to see why; their mix of live instrumentation and samples owes more to the laid-back jazz-funk shuffle of UK bands like Galliano and the James Taylot Quartet than to hardcore US-rap exponents such as Public Enemy.

The music capitalizes nicely on its jazz-funk base to take in gentle forays into reggae ("The Ropes"), swingbeat (UK hit "Spiritual Love"), 90's soul ("Just a Matter of Time"), Latin percussion ("The Consequence"), utilizes acoustic guitar on the title-track and even rock-guitar and P.E. style squeals on "Gotta Have It". There's some nice grooves and beats on here - a bit lacking in that vital spark in places, but enough to get you smiling and nodding your head.

The problem is that the vocals fail to excite, being the usual monotone rap used as a foil for traditional jazz-funk vocals with bands of that ilk. As a contrast, such a style works well, but here, as the focus, it is found lacking. Their clarity is their one redeeming feature with the lyrics solid but predictable.
